1. The Usual Suspects: Daily Habits
Before we get into the hidden causes, it helps to look at the everyday basics.
● Oral hygiene: Your mouth is home to millions of bacteria. If you don't brush and floss daily, these bacteria feed on leftover food, which creates a film called plaque.
● Food trapping: A gap between your teeth or a deep cavity gives food somewhere to hide. If it stays trapped, it starts to break down and smell.
2. Dry Mouth
Saliva acts as your mouth's natural cleaning system. It washes away food particles and helps keep bacteria in check. When your mouth gets dry, bacteria can build up more easily. Dry mouth can happen from sleeping with your mouth open, not drinking enough water, or as a side effect of certain medications.
3. Teeth Misalignment
This is a hidden reason many people don't think about. When teeth are crowded, twisted, or overlapping, they create small hiding spots that a toothbrush and floss can't easily reach. This makes it easier for plaque and food to build up out of sight.
4. Gum Disease
Periodontal disease refers to infection of the gums. If plaque sits on the teeth for too long, it hardens and irritates the gums, which can create deeper pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets can trap bacteria that are difficult to remove with brushing alone.
5. Gastrointestinal Issues
Sometimes the smell isn't coming from the mouth at all. Issues like acid reflux can cause stomach acid and gases to travel back up the throat, contributing to bad breath.
How to Keep Your Breath Fresh
● Brush twice a day for two full minutes.
● Floss daily to clean out hard to reach spots.
● Brush your tongue, since bacteria tend to gather there too.
● Drink plenty of water to keep your saliva flowing.
● Visit your dentist regularly for a professional clean.
